Well, you have to admit, Ed, how many actors could take a line like "Get your paws off me you damned dirty ape!" and invest it with enough strange energy that you remember it forever?
Not to give anything away for people that have never seen the film but Heston's Major Dundee does go memorably batshit on his Ahab-ian quest. I don't think it's an easy thing for an actor to play wacko without seeming ridiculous…really…and for an example of how easily things could go wrong...
