Icon The jock's in my school and one of the best lessons I ever learned...

When it comes to the jocks in my life, I'm pretty sure my experiences are most typical of those considered "non-jocks." (An odd story though is this - in my area, one of the biggest boosters for the hopes of his own child to make it to the major leagues, once declared when I was young, I was the best all around "raw" baseball player he had seen. My point in this is, when our teachers and mentors fail to recognize all the diamonds in the rough, we all fail).

But with this, the greatest lesson all of this taught me was how important it was to find true, good friends and to cultivate those friendships because they will stay with you all of your life, no matter what.

And when I look back at all of it, I'd much rather have what I have, than be Mr. Popular with a ton of acquaintances who all sit around worrying about how big their gut has got, how thin their hair has become and how fat their ass has grown.

Janis Ian's At Seventeen is pretty accurate.

Sort of what we all got here.
