So please explain to me why people in such a liberal, highly educated state vote for a guy who aligns himself with the tea party movement and who espouses the same philosophy that created the lack of jobs and the tanked retirement funds?

Seems to me that if you're angry or disillusioned with government you don't vote the party back in that created your disillusionment. Plus the highly intelligent people of MA must've realized the jeopardy this election would've put health care reform in, eh?
