Some of us warned of the influence seeping into the school systems during the 1960's by what came to be labelled as "stealth" candidates from the religious right.
Candidates were made to declare their religious membership after some districts realized they'd been duped, some even recalled school board members who had been elected before their religious persuasions became known by their preachings of new directions the school board should take.
Far too many school boards remained, and remain to this day, under the intractable grasp of religious right zealots who believe what this Huffington Post report reveals.
Aside from the blatant requests which got some people recalled, it began with such simple suggestions:
"Civics", the precursor to good citizenship, gone early on. Richard Dreyfus went to Cambridge in England to study what "civics" means to a society, and returned with the intent to teach it to students, and to adults who never learned of it in high school the way everyone prior to the 1960s and 70s had. (http://www.kpbs.org/news/2009/sep/22/richard-dreyfuss-fights-civics-american-education/)
PE removed! Nothing like having an ignorant and obese electorate too dumb and too easily fatigued to make it to the voting booth. (That last may be a stretch, but not an unreasonable one.)
Then Creationism over Evolution to this, the Texas pinnacle. CNN speculated this morning, that since Texas is the largest market for textbooks, this 'crap' will seep into other states' school systems by virtue of economy.
Now, we can forget separation of church and state. Easier done when Calvin replaces Jefferson in the constitutional mix of things.
What fools we mortals allow to assume positions of authority from which to piss on us and our progeny in schools we permit what we might forbid were we to actively participate in the process.
