Hi all,
Perhaps only Baerwald can answer this, but what does the line "maybe they'll come alive, come alive
again" refer to in "Rock for the Forgotten"? Is it the bartender hoping his beaten down customers will
get the fighting spirit back in them? I have a funny story about this song. My musical upbringing can be divided into two stages: before
Dylan and after Dylan. Before I discovered Bob Dylan I didn't pay attention to lyrics much. I was immersed in this mode
when I bought my first copy of Boomtown when it came out (got it for myself as a Christmas gift - a
family tradition... don't ask). Since I didn't listen to the lyrics, I thought of the title "Rock for the Forgotten" was like "Blues for the
Forgotten" or "Dirge for the Forgotten". And I thought "what a dumb name for a song". By the time I discovered Dylan and started paying attention to song lyrics I was stubbornly clinging
to this interpretation of the song title. It wasn't until 23 years later upon revisiting the song I realize it is sung from a bartender's
perspective who is a "rock" for his downtrodden customers in the same sense that Peter was a "rock"
to Jesus... a stable foundation. At least that is my take on the title. I love the song now and realize how dumb I was :)
