Yeah, even Power Station...I don't know exactly what it is but there is something terribly harsh, empty, and cold sounding on 80s era recordings. The best I can think of to describe it would be Norman Mailer's quote about everything being made out of plastic and how when a person holds a piece of plastic there is no feedback from it...that probably sounds vague...well, I guess it is vague...but that plastic surface...you know when you are holding a piece of wood or metal or glass but with plastic there is this weird sense that what you are holding is very vague and bland. Hence the "feeling" that it is disposable. All of this relates to the "sound & feel" of 80s music to me. Probably David could describe in a more technical sense why 80s records sound the way they do and he has commented on his own dislike for the sound of what I believe he termed "80s wank" and I think the word "wank" describes it well. Yeah, that Power Station stuff was very wanky.
