It was a couple of things... First, early digital recoprdings were at a low bit and sample rate, which
tended to make the low end furry and the high end harsh. The Linn drum, which was an early
"sampled" drum machine made everyone start thinking metronomically, so the natural ebb and flow of
the live track was sacrificed for Teutonic precision, and the low-resolution digital sound also intruded
onto everything from reverb and delay to the overall compression, which added still further unpleasant
artifacts to the sound. Cocaine also had an effect... Th jittery ego bias that cocaine brings out in most
people found its way into everything from rhythms to engineering. Coupled with the 'greed is good"
mentality so prevalent in general these things conspired to make a decade's worth of unlistenable
recordings.
