I was not kidding when I said about a week or so ago that I heard a report on the radio that claimed soccer is now the number 3 sport in the United States in terms of popularity...surpassing both the NBA and NHL as far as fan base goes in this country. The report claimed the NFL is number one, baseball two, soccer was at three and the NBA was a distant fourth. They said you could combine the NHL and NBA numbers and it still would not catch soccer at 3 (which I think is probably because the NHL does some dismal numbers now). The report predicted that in the next ten years soccer would pass baseball and be second only to the NFL. So either that report was way off or the guy from CNN is. I'm betting the guy from CNN is wrong and based on what I've seen here during these World Cup games, it looks to me like folks here have soccer fever.
