I'm not sure I agree. I spend several weekends throughout the Summer volunteering at music festivals just around Northern California. Volunteering keeps the cost down considerably and I'm always discovering new bands, musicians, singers I dig. Just got back from Strawberry music festival near Yosemite. A short list of some of the groups I dug:
