[Image] Dear ASIJ Alumni,

During the past few days we have received an outpouring of support and concern from the ASIJ alumni community around the world regarding the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan. We know that every member of the ASIJ community has a part of their heart in Japan and feels incredible compassion for the events that have taken place and the continuing aftermath. It means so much to us to receive your support and encouragement during this time.

The situation at ASIJ

When the earthquake struck Tokyo, all ASIJ students, faculty and staff were safely and efficiently evacuated onto the main field. The ASIJ community showed amazing cooperation and calm as well as their incredible preparedness to deal with emergency situations. Though the inside of rooms were shaken up, we are happy to report that there has been no structural damage to any buildings on either ASIJ’s Chofu or ELC campuses and no injuries.

As a result of the earthquake and tsunami, Tokyo is currently experiencing planned power outages and disruptions in transportation. Due to these logistical challenges we have cancelled classes for the week. It is important to understand that these cancellations are not due to any kind of fear factor. We feel safe and positive about continuing as soon as we have found the best way to work within the limitations of our current situation. Our faculty is doing an amazing job of ensuring that our students are connected to their classes virtually and that learning is continuing.

What will happen now?

As many of our alumni may know, the ASIJ campus was completely condemned in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It was also closed and in danger of destruction during World War II. Our ASIJ community has remained strong through many tumultuous periods and we strongly believe in the resilience and enthusiasm of our community for making the best out of any situation and coming back stronger than ever.

We thank you again for your heartwarming support during the past days.

What can I do?

Many ASIJ alumni have contacted us asking “How can I help?” Aid organizations have advised that what is most needed at this time is financial donations. There will surely come a point in which physical goods and manpower is needed to rebuild the affected areas in the north of Japan. However, at this point the situation is changing daily and professional emergency relief teams need financial support to get the goods they determine are needed on the ground and to continue their operations. ASIJ has been analyzing the best options and below are the ways we ask you to help:

From Japan

Donations to The Red Cross Japan (http://www.jrc.or.jp/english/relief/l4/Vcms4_00002070.html)
