I've been lucky to have been on this board for over a decade. Dan the Man, our most benevolent
overlord, would know the exact time period. So today I felt like opening up about my love for
music. I feel so fortunate to have been born since rock and roll burst forth on the scene in the 50s.
My musical coming of age coincided with the English version of punk rock crossing over the Atlantic
and Springsteen creating Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. I distinctly remember
putting on the first Clash album and having my worldview expanded in so many ways. The earlier
release of Born to Run had a similar effect. My life has been so enriched by this art form. Had I been
born earlier, I don't know if I would have found another medium to help sustain me. Perhaps
literature, or painting, or poetry would have ensnared me, seems very unlikely. God forbid if
religion would have filled the void! And it's exceedingly rare for me to come upon music that I truly
find transcendent, but when it does, damn, life is again full of possibilities. Here's such tune from
Titus Andronicus. For me, finding such musical nuggets is truly akin to prospecting, they are damn
elusive. This song is a musical stew of soaring guitars, raw vocals, and utter urgency. The reference
to Born to Run and the snippet of history at the end help seal the deal. My wife and daughter, who
are of course infinitely more precious to me than music, know of my musical love affair, but I'm not
sure they fully grasp the obsession.
