During the week my Mother was in the hospital passing away, my Father was having a terrible time coping with it. Just about a year and half prior, the two of them buried my sister who had died from cancer).

He said to me that he just didn't know if he could do it, so at one point I told him that he could stay home & not have to watch her succumb & that this would be a decision between the two of us & I was giving him permission to grieve the way he wanted. My Mother was also asked gave her own approval.

Through this period, in judgmental tones, other family members would demand to know where he was and why he was not at the hospital. To me it was none of their business and offensive to even ask.

My maternal grandmother while sitting across from me in the waiting room while medical personnel were caring for my Mother said to me in an all serious and intentional way how she wished my Mother had never met my Father.

It's a decision I've never regretted and one of the best gifts I've ever given to someone.....
