Dan (view)

My music this year was dominated by female voices with a few old favorites. I didn't pick a favorite - but my top 10 list would be in no particular order.

1. The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow. I visited Nashville this year and this CD was a fitting soundtrack.
2. Joan Osborne - Bring It On Home. Been following Joan since I saw her play second stage on the HORDE tour in the early-ish 90s. This one makes me wish I would've visited Memphis too.
3. Dan Bern - Wilderness Song. This was an interesting project for Dan as he interpreted into song letters from Everett Ruess's journeys through the Old West. For me - it was Dan returning to his folk ways.
4. Donald Fagen - Sunken Condos. This is Donald's first solo CD outside of his Nightfly trilogy. Maybe it's my naivety but Donald Fagen is New York City to me.
5. fun. - Some Nights. Probably the pop-iest of the bunch. But their band name sums it up for me. Period!
6. Ani Difranco - Which Side Are You On?. Ani's last few CDs for me have been hit or miss, but this set is all hit. The title track written in 30's (obviously not by Ani) is still very (very!) fitting for today.
7. Kate Miller-Heidke - Nightflight. She has a gorgeous voice. Also - I wish I could put her CD she did with Keir Nuttall under the name Fatty Gets a Stylist on this list as I first heard it this year. Look that one up too - it's syrupy and splendid and fantastic.
8. Beth Orton - Sugaring Season. Beth sings from some deep down place. Musically this CD is just as organic as Beth's voice.
9. Regina Spektor - What We Saw From The Cheap Seats. Lots of Regina and piano on this one. Just as the musical gods intended.
10. Judith Avers - God Bless The Brooders. Judith is a close friend and I'm not being at all biased when I say she is special with a beautiful (even haunting sometimes) voice. She also released a christmas CD with her band The Early Mays - but this here solo CD is my favorite. I just lover her!

That's my 2012 list.

Stinkers of the year - Paul McCartney's foray into Rod Stewart crooner land with Kisses on the Bottom (great title though!). Although his SNL appearance with Grohl and Novoselic was AWESOME!. Neil Young's weird This Land Is Your Land CD was just weird. Reminded me of Bob Dylan's Christmas disc from a couple of years back. Although the Crazy Horse Psychedelic Pill CD was a pretty fab return to the crunchy chords.
