The other day I had to deal with a neighbor complaint at one of our notorious flophouses. This several storied brick building houses a collection of down and outers in often times, dirty, stinky apartments.

A older black man in Apt 208 called about trouble with the man in Apt 207.

The older black man said he was tired about a sign his neighbor in 207 had made that said "if you want a good time, go see Linda in Apt 208." At first I did not hear the man right and asked him if he put the sign on his door and he replied, "No. It's on HIS door and Linda is his wife and I have never seen Linda in my life, Linda does not stay here, I'm not doing anything with Linda and I don't appreciate these shenanigans and don't want people knocking on my door anymore."

I asked him if all he wanted was for me to tell his neighbor to take down the sign and he said that is all he wanted and to be left alone.

I went to Apt 207 and there was a sign that did direct people to Apt 208 for a good time with Linda and after I knocked on the door, a man very similar in behavior and appearance to the now deceased Charles Bukowski answered the door. I pointed out his sign and told him I was here about that and he'd have to take it down. He then uttered a line and at the end added, "I'm a bit schizophrenic." He then told me that Linda was his wife and that she had been living down in Apt 208 for seven years. He also said he could hear her conversations through the walls and he wanted her to quit talking about him and to quit messing with him and the guy in 208 was hiding her out all this time.

I swear - this guy was in a white, tank top t-shirt, had a rolled cigarette and yellow fingers and bumps on his face and looked almost like Charles Bukowski.

I then asked him, "Sir, when was the last time you actually saw your wife?" And his prompt reply was, "Twenty-three years ago."

As I told others, I do not know which is worse - the neighbor in Apt 208 not realizing how mentally ill his neighbor is or the man in Apt 207 not knowing himself how mentally ill he is.
