My wife and I have been totally taken with a few series from our friends across the pond:

Foyle's War (great acting and a WW2 history lesson to boot)

Luther (a gritty contemporary cop show)

The Fall (Gillian Anderson like you've never seen her pursuing a serial killer in N. Ireland)

The State Within (a 7 part geo-politcal thriller)

As to the films, this website should fit the bill:
