On Twitter, David (https://twitter.com/dbaerwald1) has become fairly
active. On Feb 3, he tweeted, "I got a little secret." In recent days,
David has been tweeting a series of cryptic messages related to the date
May 15, each one accompanied by old videos ranging from "Triage"-era
songs to David & David's "River Gonna Rise."For example, on May 1st David tweeted, "On 5.14.15 I'm going to turn into
a real pan-handling pain in the ass."I may be overly optimistic, but this surely portends either the release
of a new album or a Kickstarter project to fund one. If David announces the release of new music, 13 years after "Here Comes
the New Folk Underground," I will attempt my first ever backflip since I
was a kid. Ok, maybe not. That could end up on YouTube with a #Fail
hashtag. But that'll be my mental state.Of late, I've been marveling at David's ability to tell short stories
about such compelling characters in song. There aren't many songwriters
who can dive as deep into characters in the space of just 4 or 5 minutes.
And so tunefully, too. David's audience nowadays may be smaller than he deserves, but those of
us who know just how talented he is will treasure new music from him.
