I won't go down that path, sir, but I must offer a statistic to contest your view that he's
compassionate. Ponder this: every year, 9 million children under the age of 5 die. When I first read
that I was stunned. By the time you finish reading this, a child, probably in Africa or Asia, will die.
Sam Harris had this take: either God can intervene but chooses not to, and is therefore evil, or
God lacks the power to intervene and is therefore impotent. And I'll leave it at that as I
understand that this is a topic we probably exhausted long ago. But it's a statistic that we should
