Well, that is a side effect that I am against. However, I would probably
blame the lawyers in this case and not really people wanting to censor that
show. TV Land is a company owned and operated by a larger company and
basically they are making a business decision. Same with Warner Brothers
discontinuing to license images of the General Lee car. They are just taking
the route their lawyers tell them will cause the fewest problems. I think we
have to support their right to make decisions that represent what they feel
are in the best interests of their company. It's not the first time nor will it be the last that an entertainment
industry company avoids a property that they feel will stir controversy. As I said, I don't think we need to remove the flag from everything it
appears on or hide it away forever. I think people should be able to do
whatever they want with it and they are all welcome to their personal
feelings about it. My only issue is with flying the flag over government
buildings and property or for any type of government use except to educate
people about the real history of the flag. This is clearly a mistake because
it would be the same as flying a Nazi flag over government buildings in
Germany...you know just for old time's sake. The people that make noise about "erasing" every image of the Confederate
flag anywhere are basically a dangerous group because they desire to hide
something from the eyes of the public that would educate them about and
represents mistakes we made in the past and they are failing to acknowledge
that over the years the flag for many people is no longer used to represent
the horrors it once did but now is used as another pop culture icon. We can't, nor should we, "erase" everything that offends somebody and if we
do that we will live in a strange and screwed up world. I think people need
to be offended and that it is a good thing to offend people sometimes but I
do not think the government should be in the business of offending people
nor should they be allowed to clamp down on things that offend people. When you do that you move right into sanctioning the suppression of free
speech and once you start down that road you are going to have a hell of a
time putting the brakes on. Offending somebody should NEVER be something that government and the
judicial system legislates. If you do that you will pretty much need to lock
up everybody in the entertainment industry because they all offend somebody
somewhere. And while they are at it they will need to lock me up as well and
pretty much everybody here because I'm sure we've all offended somebody at
some point. Issues like this always bring out the stupid in people and you know
what...it is stupid that really offends me.
