Peter T,

Yes, you are so right.

I was off the street dealing with crime scenes for 17 yrs. So for me, the first 2 1/2 years it was street work, and now, for the last two and half years, it's been more, so I had this 17 year break in between. When I came back out on the street, the increase in the amount of dealing with people afflicted with mental illnesses has been staggering. So, after experiencing this for a period of time, I have been asking my co-workers if this was an accurate perception and everyone has agreed that I am not seeing something that is not there.

I think there has to be some sort of cultural examination regarding things like this because something is going on - whether it be diet, nutrition, change in mental health service, prescription medication or what. (So many more people seem to be on behavioral medications that it makes me wonder if the ups and downs are more pronounced or something).

And with this, I find it especially troubling when it comes to brain development and how so many people don't understand the importance of pre-natal care and nutrition when it comes to children and behavior, especially when it comes to the poor or unable.

Because if one thinks of it...as a nation, we end up paying for it one way or another and what would be a better investment? Better brain development early on would probably be the better bet, so maybe we should try giving kids at risk a healthy breakfast before the school day starts.

Some day I think smarter people are going to be able to weave all of these threads together (child rearing, sex education, nutrition and so on) to get to a better place of better develpment because we have to ask, when do we want to pay for it - in a preventative manner or after when it is more expensive.
