Frankly, we current Americans don't deserve this experiment in democracy. We have failed and failed miserably. When I look at what is going on with this country, it sickens me. We have lost our way. Art and culture and science are nothing. People only care about the consumption culture and accumulation of wealth and shit. We are becoming so individualized that our hostility towards all things different has only grown. I sometimes wonder why Americans are so angry. It makes no sense in some ways. We live a pampered life and are only growing into spineless, brainless consumers of shit and products fed to us by those that tell us we need them. The other night I saw an old movie with Jason Robards called A Thousand Clowns. I suggest people look it up, stay with it and watch it. For an old movie, the writer and director were on to something about life and our failure to live and love life. Last night, I went to musical performances of young teens in front of a highly respected music critic brought in to provide lessons to up their performance. What I saw disturbed me - it was a lack of joy these performers were missing. The critic was excellent in his own joy, but these kids, most likely failed by their parents, were there by rote and nervous due to stress we parents should be alleviating for them. At the end of it, I wanted to stand up and scream at them, "ENJOY THIS!! YOU ARE MAKING MUSIC!!"My point in all of this is that the people that could create a world of life and living are instead the biggest vampires trying to suck out that last drop of life from those it creates to feed from. Really, think of it - take tobacco - on a higher plane, as a country, how can we continue to allow a product that kills people to be marketed in ways to addict people? Just like the food products that we are bred to be told to buy. We are made sick by marketed products to consume more products to make us "better." We are bred to ignore life, the things in life that matter and to become soulless consumers to a few can grow fatter off of the ignorance beat into our lives. Hell, I know this is sort of rambling, but it all dovetails into the thought that great lives and living are possible, but not until people learn that it is about a quality of life, not quantity, but I am so doubtful this will ever happen because those with the self interest in perpetuating this life are just too goddamned powerful to be allowed to change.
