I would be interested in what our "three amigos" think about Trump's "performance" and Russia in
particular. Surely they are checking in
now and again. Come on, guys, we know you're there!
With respect to this unfolding Russia scandal, I may be wrong but I tend to think that much of
Trump's unwavering
base (actually it more resembles a tribe) has simply made a commitment to ignorance by relying on right
wing media that provides nothing resembling balance (Hannity, Fox, Limbaugh, Breitbart). They simply
can't
connect dots that they don't see. This group is happy in their ignorance. On the other hand, those who
have
ventured beyond their ideological echo chambers, seen the dots, and connected them, are another story.
Their continued loyalty to Trump signals that they are clearly undemocratic and unpatriotic.
There is of course a subset within both of these groups who are the single-issue voters that are
resolutely
Republican: gun rights zealots, the anti-abortion crowd, those bitter culture warriors who remain incensed
that marriage equality is the law of the land, and lastly, the anti-tax crowd who feel they are already
overspending. These groups will overlook a hell of a lot of issues on which they don't align with the
GOP. I'll wager that their identities are inextricably intertwined with their one political cause.
I don't know what egregious act from Trump would loosen the bonds of these disparate groups
to
dear leader. Similarly, I don't know what
it would take for Republican politicians to show some strength of character and put country ahead of
party
and job security.
