While Trump does resemble a lizard in that he operates on habit and the
instinct of a mob boss, he nonetheless possesses near the middle of his
brain, an amygdala, the first, and sometimes only, receptor of and
reaction to fear and/or aggression.Countering the sometimes clumsy reflexes of the amygdala is the
evolutionary newest part of our brain, the prefrontal cortex. As an example of the role of each, is a white policeman's fear reactions,
first to a black person, then to that black person's reaching into his
pocket and withdrawing what the amygdala interprets as a gun, while
milliseconds later, his prefrontal cortex says, "damn, it was a
cellphone."An excitatory sensory reaction's error costs a life that the inhibitory
message from the "reasoning" frontal part of the brain was too late to
restrain. On the other hand, the white policeman whose amygdala does not light up
with unnecessary fear, first to the race of the black person, then to the
'reaching', receives the benefit of reasoned training over reflex, and
arrests rather than shoots.A person whose amygdala has been enlarged by a constant flow of fear-
inducing neural messages, research shows, is unable to make good
prefrontal decisions.Today's sensory sledgehammers coming from the Manafort and Cohen trials
will be little offset by the planned narcissistic-gorging at tonight's
West Virginia rally. Trump's amygdala has grown too large with fear,
guaranteeing prefrontal decisions more erratic than those we've seen of
late, such as repealing sanctions on Russia; more erractic perhaps than
from any president in our country's history; more erratic, perhaps, than
from any leader in the history of the world.I would build a fire and roast marshmallows if his behavior endangered
only himself But I can't celebrate the threat to our country this
totally consumed pseudo-leader inflicts with every juvenile-deprived
"hit 'em back" amygdala induced twitter rampage.
