Those smug little entitled boys from Covington Catholic High School are justifiably receiving their
comeuppance on global media this weekend. But I hope an incredible teaching opportunity is not missed
here. Nathan Phillips is under no obligation, obviously, as he's the aggrieved party but I hope in the days
ahead we'll hear that he and the boys meet. And why not have it on 60 Minutes. He can share his perspective
and speak to the ignorance and hostility that he and his small group were subjected to. He can speak to the
genocides that Native Americans have suffered. He can speak to present day humiliations, large and small.
This can be part of a larger national conversation regarding how long established norms of civil discourse
have been trampled by Trump. Perhaps he, too, may see the role he has played, though I'm reaching here.
Again, Mr. Phillips is justified in not wanting to be in the company of these young men, but this could be the
moment when they grow as human beings, when many other Americans grow as well. Thoughts?Peter T.
