So, here are some movies that are fairly recent that I thought were fantastic...

Sorry to Bother You - This one comes from first time filmmaker Boots Riley and really is quite a debut. It is nothing you might expect and morphs through multiple genres as it goes. Probably a film you have to watch more than once and will not be for everybody. Here'

Mandy - This is from a guy named Panos Cosmatos, probably nobody here has heard of him. It stars Nic Cage, which is likely a warning sign for many people. Cage, I think, gives a tremendous performance here moving through all aspects of what makes Nic Cage, Nic Cage. It may sound strange to say this for a film that is essentially a horror/revenge tale that includes things like a chainsaw battle and a guy wearing a strap on dildo that is equipped with a bladed tip but this is one seriously beautiful film to look at. It also is a fantastic sounding film with the picture opening with a tune from King Crimson as Cage's character enters a helicopter and flies over what appears to be a beautiful forest in the pacific northwest and a stunning score by Johann Johannsson that I think was his final work. I also think the film is a perfect metaphor for the times we live in. As a warning, this is not in any way family viewing and is very unique in many ways.  Skip it if violent and disturbing imagery is too much for you. It's pretty funny as well but in a very black sense. Here's a guy doing an acoustic cover of some of Johannsson's work...

The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Probably everybody has heard of Yorgos Lanthimos. The Favourite was nominated for Best Picture. However, so far, I think this film is his masterwork and probably the closest to watching something Kubrickian (I am a huge Kubrick fan) outside of the films of Kubrick. A huge part of that is the tracking shots in the film but also the entire feel, pace, and approach. So, if you don't like Kubrick pictures, skip this one.  This is a strange and mysterious thriller, and also a revenge tale, and again won't be for everyone.
