As the article states that includes stocks in pension funds and the like. Those are not some you check regularly but rather once a year when you get your yearly statement from the fund/IRA/401K/whatever. I don't think more than 5-10 % actually trade stocks and bonds more than once every 5 years hence they probably don't see a need to follow the DOW/Nasdaq etc...
