Sometimes you have to look for something bright in all the rubble. To me, 2020 was such a horrible year for everybody it almost seemed as if the fact that he passed before the year was over was a relief of sorts. I knew after he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized a couple of days after Thanksgiving time was short. He did not want heart surgery at 83 and refused a pacemaker. I did not expect him to make it to Christmas. The last few days of his life were not good.

He likely gave me one last gift, that I would start 2021 with the belief it had to be better than this past year.  So many people lost in 2020 that I have a lot of company. Not that that is a comfort, just a truth and we all have to find the way forward.  We talked politics an awful lot, surprise right? He was a lifelong Democrat. I was happy he saw Biden defeat Trump. In one of our conversations in November he said to me "You know, we really dodged a bullet with this guy (Trump). As bad as he was and as much destruction as he has wrought it could have been much, much worse. Much worse."

"He seemed hell bent on destruction that's for sure." I said.

"A rabid animal is most dangerous when he is cornered. He knows he is cornered. We're not out of it yet. This will be a very rough few weeks until Joe takes over and we will see things we would never expect to see." he said.

I was thinking of this as the Trump cult stormed the capitol yesterday. Kind of glad he did not have to see that.
