I do not think 17 Republican Senators will break ranks to convict Donald Trump and the reason for this is because the Republican Party Apparatus knows if Trump is convicted, then that might mean a 20 to 40 percent loss of Trump voters and that means future elections for many Republicans may be very hard to win.  Especially national elections.

Now, I think there is a way for Democrats to force them to convict but I do not have the confidence that they will take this way into consideration.

This way goes back to the Max Cleland Georgia Senate race in 2002.  Remember back then that the triple-amputee Vietnam war vet was beaten by a draft-dodging Republican after Cleland's loyalty and patriotism were attacked over the attacks on 9/11.  Back then, Bin Laden was used as a cudgel against Democrats all over and used in a way to question the patriotism and war on terror abilities of Democrats all across the nation.

The Dems need to link these Capitol terrorists to the Republicans in such a way that they become the new shadow of the Republican Party.  The Dems need to make Republicans disavow these people every single chance they get.  They need to do it to their faces in public, too.  For example, each time a Dem speaks, the Dem needs to declare, "I simply do not know WHY Republicans will not denounce these people and tell them they do not want their support."  And they need to keep doing this even if some Repubs denounce the support of these radical Republicans.   And they need to put faces to those that do not denounce these people.
