i think the difference that i have noticed is that Pete (as a leftie) might want the same things for his family as you do but he'll want the same thing for everybody else's family too where i sense your right leaning tendencies will be a lot more discriminating in who you would want 'it' for.
Your generalisation that we are all 'lefties' was a bit childish too. Look at Dslacker for example...he might appear left leaning but we were all looking out for him marauding on the steps on Capitol Hill in his viking outfit last week. He wants Danelaw for you which would make Trump look like Mother Teresa.
