I think that there's a general misunderstanding of what conservatism has traditionally meant. I think of it as a respect for traditions, of what has worked in the past, and a wariness to too quickly adopt new norms and laws. It requires an appreciation for allies and institutions, property rights, the rule of law, and respect for the individual. It believes that the government alone should have a monopoly on the use of violence. Those in Trumpistan have little regard for these fundamental conservative principles. Personally, I am conservative by temperament but my politics have always run in the opposite directions, but not too far on the tail of that distribution. I think many in Trumpistan don't realize how luck is an enormous determinant in how one is doing in life. We need to reduce the enormous role that bad luck plays in the quality of one's life.
