Great thoughts, EEE, and as you know, I share your concerns. Next on my reading list is Jonathan Rauch's "The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth". This recent podcast with Michael Shermer touches upon some of your concerns. It's a marvelous back and forth, so try to lend an ear, DBIS folks!
Shermer says Rauch's book is the best one he's read since Steven Pinker's magnificent opus, "Enlightenment Now". That is saying something.
