It is true they did hold and we were only a couple more Trump firings away from him being able to cause total collapse of these institutions and destruction of democracy. We essentially, got a little lucky because Trump did not find his toadies in time.
I don't want to come here and be a downer. I don't like saying anything I am saying. The problem is Trump is out of office but the attack is more relentless than ever. I believe primarily because the open fascists in the Republican party were made aware of how close they got and such a large number of them participated they now see the path to cover-up being just keep the attack going until they succeed in destroying our government.
I already see the calls in the media, regular media not FOX Propaganda, and from Democrats not to punish Trump or guilty Republicans. The primary excuse being that it will trigger Republicans to attempt to jail and prosecute any and every Democrat on whatever they can invent. So, don't prosecute criminal behavior because you fear retribution from the criminals, not a good plan. They want federal prosecutors nowhere near prosecuting Trump, or Republicans in the House or Senate. They want to leave that to state prosecutors.
This is a mistake not only because it shows there are no consequences for utterly obscene actions but once you let all these people off the hook they will scream from every rooftop that the reason they were not prosecuted was because there was nothing to prosecute. Through proclaiming their innocence they will have full approval to do it all again...only bigger and better.
How long can our institutions hold when they are under constant attack and elected Republicans are looking to change laws in states all over the country that make this attack legal?
