Ha, well yes, they do break out the Christmas music every year. We were driving the other day and searching through stations Christmas music came on and Julia said "Leave that on." and then a few minutes later she said "Change the station. I used to like Christmas music, now I can't stand it."
That probably has something to do with part of her side of the family now despising us. I do wonder if kids now would tolerate listening to Perry Como or Dean Martin crooning about holiday cheer. It seems every shopping center I am in at this time of year is blasting that "A Very Special Christmas" album from the 1980s. I guess that is now classic Xmas music.
There is a lot of choice and a lot of distractions. Kids don't buy albums anymore. You can pick and choose songs you want to hear. I think the kids like to listen to a song, then watch a video of something, then look at social media, then maybe play a game...basically never investing more than minutes in any one thing.
I don't have kids but I have a lot of children that claim me as one of their pals. Mostly girls aged 4 to 14, which admittedly is weird and I don't understand it. So, I learn from them. Interestingly they don't seem to have much interest in TV. Which makes me wonder if even that will fade away. Watching and listening to stuff seems to all be done with their phone now. I would plug their phones into an outdoor music set-up I had and they liked that back in my old neighborhood. I would blast their music and they would dance and do gymnastics in the yard. They would DJ from their Iphones.
They would tell me about songs they liked and I would try to understand. I knew none of their music and they seemed to have new favorites every time they took over my yard. And there was a lot of auto tune going on in the songs they liked.
My niece is 4 and her favorite singer is JoJo Siwa. I don't know any of her music but in 100 years maybe she will be considered classic rock. She tells me about JoJo and I listen.
All of you that are parents have experienced what your children are entertained by. I would ask what you think the younger generations like.
David is a dad, I'd be curious as to what his son's take was on his music and what his son listened to. I've hung out with a lot of kids 14 and under and from that I am well aware they have no idea about the music I like and I have no idea about music they like.
Julia teaches high school kids. She will chaperone their dances and gatherings. The play music at them and I ask her what they listen to. She generally does not know most of it but one song that seems to carry through from year to year is Abba's Dancing Queen. Yes, Abba, who I think actually just released a new album and are doing some sort of "virtual" tour.
I would think parents do introduce their kids to music they liked. My goddaughter plays the cello and took up guitar last summer. She chose an Ibanez acoustic that looks just like the one I have. She came up to see me with it last summer so we could play together. She likes all kinds of music but her dad is a Berklee trained jazz bassist and so was always playing all sorts of music around the house so she grew up with a lot of different sounds and appreciates a lot of music. I figure kids like her are an exception.
I don't know, what was it like for the parents here? What do your kids like however old they may be?
