David captures the sad vibe so well in songs, and often he finds a way to juxtapose it with something emotional or thrilling. It can devastate you and yet kind of magically lift you at the same time. Paddy Chayevsky's Dead, The Postman, The Stranger, Why . . . they all mine that vein really successfully. It's a quality in his writing that I very much appreciate.
