I'll have to look it up. In reporting I heard someone said the record was 9 votes without coming to terms on a speaker and that you had to go back to 1928 or 1898 to find a circumstance anywhere close to this.
In modern times, it is obviously a ceremonial thing, in that the party determines who their speaker will be prior to taking the vote. Obviously, McCarthy thought it was him because he moved into the office prior to the vote.
At present, he seems to have destroyed the position because he agreed to lower the threshold to raise a vote to vacate the speaker to a single member of congress. This is essentially saying, "OK, bring on the chaos!" because the Republican congress is loaded with nutjobs that are looking for any way they can to create chaos and get in front of a TV camera and say insane things. I thought it was hilarious that FOX morons like Hannity were bemoaning this WHEN THEY CREATED THIS INSANITY BY GIVING THESE LOONS A PLATFORM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I would say to them, "Reap what you sow, baby!"
