As I've pointed out, the original tenets of the rationale for the creation of the RRHOF are remarkably clear and what pisses me off is that these tenets are not being followed anymore and in fact, have been hugely modified and ignored in such a way that we are where we are now.
I agree that this thing we call rock and roll has origins and influence in many different areas, but there are way too many people that are being inducted in current times that don't even come close to meeting any of these tenets - and it is increasingly disgusting when these entrees come at the expense of valid candidates.
For example, Tina Turner was inducted as a solo artist AFTER both Madonna and Whitney Houston.
Or, listen to the music of Hound Dog Taylor and R.L. Burnside and tell me that their blues did not influence rock and rollers like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Rolling Stones.
Sadly, I think there are two sides of a coin to this issue - on the one side you have people that really give a shit about the genre of Rock and Roll and then on the other side you have the money-grubbing fuckers that are willing to throw everything out the door for that last penny.
The last comment I have is that, to me, it is really disappointing that the artists that could really make a difference - i.e., the Springsteens, Stones, and Zeppelins - remain silent on this when they should be pushing for those artists that are deserving but keep getting overlooked for pop, rap or country pablum that keeps being inducted (and don't get me wrong - actual arguments can be made for some of these artists - take Willie Nelson - if he is not a representative of the life and spirit of a rock and roller, then none of the like candidates are).
And look at the treatment of heavy metal - of which I'm not really a big fan of - Eddie Trunk is right - heavy metal has been ridiculously underrepresented and that needs to change. I mean, I can't stand the band Motley Crue but it is deserving of entry, as are many other heavy metal acts.
