Could be he's croaking through the songs. Nothing wrong with that - Dylan's been doing it for more than 15 years. Tom Waits made a career of it. Louis Armstrong was famous for it. Maybe John doesn't want to highlight and asked for it to be a bit buried. I'm listening to it now - up to track 4. There are some times where there's a musical breakdown and he stretches his voice a bit. But I mostly agree his vocals are bit buried.
