It gives the people who never saw those bands a chance to experience those songs in a live setting. I think songs are different in a live setting with the musicians right there playing them. I think it often reveals what makes those songs so incredible.
Sure, I'd love to continue to see the actual bands play them but people, unlike songs, don't last forever.
I also really love hearing a great artist perform a song by another great artist and they give you their interpretation of the song.
David did do a cover of a Tom Petty song which you could hear on this site and really kind of even more important to hear it now because Tom is gone.
