As Weill's/Brecth's more famous previous Threepenny-"opera" it could just as well be classified as a musical. The tunes are really catchy and the story is far more advanced (and political) than traditional opera.
Danish musician Sebastian also toyed with this in 1979. He has later made musical versions of among others Treasure Island to great success in northern Europe.
