Funny story how the whole singing thing—we had this band in high school, I played bass. We had a singer, a girl named Mary Anne and I guess I wrote the lyrics, not that there was anything much to them. Anyway a guy saw us and offered to record a single for us, two sides. We were thrilled, but Mary Anne had a panic attack the night before and quit, leaving us sitting around going what do we do? Our ostensible leader, the biggest most confident guy, who had the van, and got us the gigs. He points an accusing finger at me and says, "well you wrote the fucking lyrics, you fucking sing them." I was easily the shyest, least singer-y guy in the band, still not at home in the least in America, but they bullied me into it. So we go to this little studio in the valley, we put the tracks down, the guy hangs a big German-looking mic in front of me, and much to everybody's surprise, this huge...thing of a voice came out. I was shocked, everybody was. So, personalities be damned, from that point on I was the singer, and I never ever really quite got comfortable with that.
