Reg, and all of you,
Of course I'll continue making my own music, and when there's enough of it, I'll put it all together, and I'll let you all know, and make it available to you. But things being such as they are, my own personal music will remain just that. Personal.
Anytime somebody puts money into making something, be they a corporation or a university or a rich benefactor, or whatever, they've bought the right to hassle you about it.
Of course I've toyed with the notion of trying to do it on a larger commercial level. But really, why? There's no demand for it, and trying to crush this stuff into any kind of existing format would deny it's only reason for being.
If Captain Beefheart had had a useful career as a painter, he wouldnt have been so pissed off all the time. You can be a wierd grouchy guy in any art but pop music. Pop music's
about quick fixes, pretty faces, and a punch line. I'm all for pop, I love it, I do it all the time, I like doing it, I want to do more, but not for the NFU. The NFU is exempt, if
a little underproductive.
NFU, while standing for the New Folk Underground, derives its
other name from NFU, Not For Use, a rubber stamp. I take a certain feeling of liberation from those initials. It's a matter of pride, like a Not For Hire sticker on a 16-wheeler.
It's where I can say the things I can't ever say.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that this all came about
in a very unique and personal way, and that to tamper with it would be tampering with something larger than my own trip, and I just don't have the stomach for it. Fortunately, I don't have to. I'm not disallowing the possibility of some quirky release, as long as the releasers don't feel compelled to fuck with me, or Will, or the music too much.
Honestly, how would you feel if on this web page you were suddenly barraged with advertisments, and offers of cheap merchandise, and other useless junk? Wouldnt you feel something important was lost? For a David Baerwald Baseball Cap? It's not numbers for this kind of thing. It's something else entirely.
It's best that A Fine Mess be discovered and sought out by those who want it, rather than destroyed in the process of
trying to cram it down the throats of people who want nothing to do with it. It's what it is, and what it should be, and that's how I like it. I hope you understand. And please feel free to copy it, for your friends anyway. I mean don't sell it or anything.
I look forward to continuing our discussions.
Yrs,
