all kidding aside, my favorite artist on a consistent basis would have to be rickie lee jones. to see her live doing "last chance texaco" or "magazine", or dueting with lyle lovett on "weasel and the white boys cool" at red rocks in colorado, her cornsilk hair and yellow sundress blowing in the wind, strumming and picking and so into it, and lyle matching her with cool little licks, grinning away. her writing is at once transcendent and approachable, and like david, she has not been afraid to branch out as of late, causing the critics to huff and puff, but staying true to who she is while at the same time experimenting with different sounds. someone else who, sad to say is no longer with us, is jeff buckley, who i saw live in denver for 10 bucks (!!!!!) with soul coughing, and who was my hero and my hope for the modern rock movement until he went for a fatal swim in the mississippi. damn, he was promising!such a beautiful voice and such a great guitarist. the fact that he is dead and michael bolton still draws breath makes me truely believe that satan hisself is running the old show here on our little orb. lets see, who else.....freedy johnston is great, wonderful lyricist, great sense of pathos.... i miss american music club like crazy, they had some real power and mark eitzels melancholy voice.... i miss concrete blonde, too....... i love anything anton fier is involved in, ESPECIALLY old school golden palominos........ its great to see xtc back to making records; andy partridge is a pop MASTER with enough brains to make it all interesting........just bought joe henrys "murder of crows" on cd after wearing out the cassette for 7 years......eric matthews is the king of the layered vocal track!!!.....steve tibetts continues to be sonically amazing...... . all of these artists have shaped me in much the same way that some great novels have, by allowing me to see my life through their eyes, and by allowing me a glimpse of their mastery of music and words, which when it is done well, is truly a gift and a privelege. smart music is good music, and my life is always better and richer for having experienced it.
