I'm thumbing through 1981's, The New Book of Rock Lists" by Dave Marsh and James Bernard, when, on pages 334-335, I come upon "Greil Marcus Lists 100 New Dylans". And who comes in at # 3, but David Baerwald. Now, truth be told, the list is written alphabetically, and that's why Steve Albini and Eric Anderson sit at the top 2 positions.
It's a mixed-bag of selections. There are the serious contenders: DB, Costello, Bowie, Fogerty, Lennon, Marley, Mitchell, Reed, Springsteen, Sly Stone, Strummer, Thompson, Wonder, Young, Zevon.
And then there are oddballs, the nonsensical, and the you have me scratching my head at that one, Greil: Lester Bangs, Jimmy Carter, John Denver, Bob Geldof, Allen Ginsberg, John Lydon, Mojo Nixon, Sonny and Cher, Harry Dean Stanton.
And then there are the, er, dangerously deluded types: David Koresh, and Charles Manson.
Note: I saw Robert F. Kennedy's name on the list and, forgetting the list was published almost 45 years ago, I foolishly assumed it was the nut chosen to head the Dept. of HHS.
