That's a very good question, and one that Dave and I ask each other quite often. We've been offered small fortunes to work
together, we're closer as people than we've ever been,
we enjoy one another's company, and respect one another's talents... So why not? We've known each other for 20 years,
and he's still (or again) one of my closest male friends.
So what's the problem? I don't know, looking at the above recitation, maybe there isn't one, except that both of us are allergic to promotion, and seem to crumple in the spotlight.
There's a perversity in both our makeups, a relatively common one that I've noticed in many of my friends and colleagues, which could be categorised as agoraphobia, the fear of the marketplace. It's so much simpler to do what one does as an artist for the sheer pleasure of doing it, and on the other hand, for money, to apply one's skills as a technician in the service of those who have the "star" gene; that combination of charisma, hunger, and personal ambition that is so regrettable in a friend but so necessary in a public figure.
Maybe that's our problem. I honestly don't know. I do know that I think the world of him, and if you'd like, I'll arrange somehow for you to hear our unreleased material,
possibly with the assistance of our padrone Dano and the ever-stalwart Jeff Wells. I have piles of stuff floating around, which, as a benefit of my recent move, is all nicely boxed and filed, and will soon find its way into my studio
tape locker.
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your selected cuts from a Fine Mess, and I urge all of you to do the same thing, ie pick the songs you like, and make your own discs. Also, in my move, I found several dozen more Fine Messes, so there's a few more available.
Yrs,
David Baerwald
