Icon David Gray, Run Baby Run

On David Gray, yes, I'm familiar with him, both personally and as a fan, and I'm happy to say that he's
actually doing quite well, and is even, in some record industry circles, being touted as an example of what
should and will come to eminence in the next (pop) cycle. That is, after the current waning reign of imbecility runs its course.

On Run Baby Run and If Ever I Thought, they are actually, though they share many of the same words,
two entirely different songs, serving two entirely different purposes; "Run Baby Run" being intended as sort of a comment on the ruthless, empty material ambition I saw in so many children of "failed" hippies, and the literal rage for "success" that so many of them, including Sheryl, seemed to manifest; where "If Ever I Thought" is a more or less straightforward second-hand autobiography that I overheard in a Hollywood
jail cell, told by one male prostitute to another. I was struck by those two prostitutes. They didnt seem to mind jail at all, and they seemed entirely suited to their time, much more so than myself, who was outraged by everything. They made the best of it. They had fun. Having found a commodity that had value in almost any strata, they seemed able to move freely through the world, in spite of their temporary imprisonment. I envied their looseness, being pretty stiff and dogmatic, myself.

On the other hand, maybe there werent so many differences between the two, as I've always seen vague parallels between Sheryl and Heidi Fleiss, another '90's icon.

Yrs,

David Baerwald
