I am very very sorry Reg, but I find that to be incredibly naive and a ludicrously optimistic view of the human condition.
Even from my perspective of living in a welfare state utopia, most people vote for what is best for themselves first and what is good for society later. How that plays out depends on what lies they have been fed and THEN what they choose to believe.
Case in point - Greenland: "Our" (quotation marks VERY deliberate) indigenous Inuit population in Greenland have very slowly become educated enough, that they think they can decide for themselves, what they want and how they want to live... However at least 1/3 of them rely on the danish welfare state and a LOT still haven't grasped the culture chock of coming from a hunter gatherer society and into the 20'th century (not 21'st). Consequently the last election mistakenly selected a majority who thought they could say NO to Uranium mining but yes to mining other minerals in the same fucking mountain... That is not how mining works! Same majority now thinks they can say NO to Denmark AND NO to the USA at the same time... The naivete is just staggering...
How this relates to your election is simple - loads of people mistaken believe they can live how they want without society having a say because "freedum"... I repeat: The naivete is just staggering...
