I remember reading about Joe Henry hear a while back, and yeah, David did tell some story about him didn't he? I don't know if you were looking for an answer to your question about why guys like David & Joe aren't more popular but how about this...
1) There's a difference between art & product and I think that here in America the vast majority prefer product. You don't have to think about it, just consume it, it never requires you to work to engage yourself with what may be happening within it.
2) If something is invented just to be popular, it's already broken. If you are that popular you are probably doing something wrong. I could give countless examples here but I'll just let that lie there for now...
3) Maybe kids just buy more music than adults. Just going for the easy answer here. Sorry.
