Doc Wahoo,

Let's see... what am I excited about in music this summer? Well, currently I'm most thrilled about David Mead, a shockingly good singer/songwriter, shocking mostly because of the clarity and flexibility of his voice and the Beatles-esque but somehow new-sounding quality of his songs. He's coming out with a sophomore album this Tuesday, and in the meanwhile is making the rounds playing in small venues around the nation (right here in Madison, Wisconsin tonight!).

I'm also eagerly awaiting the imminent release of "Amnesiac," the companion album to Radiohead's "Kid A." Apparently, they recorded both simultaneously, and they've said in interview that "Amnesiac" has some of the same sonic experimentation of "Kid A" (apparently one song is built over the backing track of a rejected "Kid A" song played backwards), but features Thom Yorke's vocals more prominently and is made up more of "songs" than sounds. That could be a good or a bad thing, in my opinion, but I'm eager to find out how it works.

As for other concerts besides David Mead, I'm hoping to be able to see Dr. John, who's coming through here in late June (I don't know if it's part of a national tour or what). Otherwise, I'm mostly catching local bands here in Wisconsin: in particular, I'm quite fond of a "nuevo tango" band, a latin jazz ensemble, and a klezmer band, all of whom do some really great shows here in the area (I can pass on names for anyone who thinks they might be in this part of the US, and interested).

As for my personal musical exploits, I'm definitely working in a rather different musical genre than anything that tends to get discussed here, but I just have to say (as I'm incredibly excited at the moment) that I'm just finishing up a live recording (read: not enough money to do any editing) of a non-religious Requiem Mass (on text by Kurt Vonnegut) that lasts about 45 minutes, and is scored for 4 solo singers, a small choir, a string quartet, and a mallet percussion player. That's the main excitement for me here. Woo-hoo! I've finished it!

Anyway, pardon that rather narcissistic outburst, but I couldn't help myself. So somebody else post some summer music stuff here, so I don't seem so self-obsessed!
