Thanks Andrea...The show has people working out in the field who cull the filed court cases throughout the country and look for those which they think might make for interesting television. It certainly wasn't something we sought out although my wife and I had joked the week before we got our initial request to appear on the show about doing just that...appearing on one of those shows.
You're flown out to Hollywood (coach of course) and all your expenses are paid by the JJ show. You're also paid an small appearance fee in additiion to whatever damages you may be awarded. The same holds true for the defendants.
In our case it was the defendants who really wanted to do the show because any damages they incure are also paid by the JJ producers and to quote them..."We'd really like to do the show because we could never afford to go to Calfornia and this way we can go there for free and you can get your money."
One other interesting note...They fly you out on separate flights and have you stay in separate hotels (Ramada Inn on Santa Monica Blvd in our case) and when you arrive at the studio they're very careful to have you enter opposite ends of the building so the chances of you seeing each other prior to appearing before Judge Judy are very minimal.
I never thought I'd do something like that but it was a good experience and Tammy and I actually had fun doing it even though we had that deer in the headlights look at times.
