Tift and DB were in Atlanta earlier this summer at the Red Light Cafe. Missed that show because I was out of town. But caught her last night at Smith's Olde Bar with Caitlin Cary opening. A few people had posted positive comments about her earlier here at the InfoSource and there has been a ton of good feedback on the Uncle Tupelo mailing list. So I had to check her out.

And folks ... damn ... that girl can sing! What's she sound like? Take some Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt (w/ Stone Pony's), and Kelly Willis and mix it up with some rock'n'roll and to me you have nirvana. I love pedal steel and dobro. The band was tight. The lady plays harmonica, guitar, and piano, and has one of those rare voices that will quiet the whole audience (even the date crowd). Great interaction with the audience. She couldn't open her twist-off beer (Bud) and handed it to a guy in front of the stage to open for her. The crowd was appreciative (place was absolutely packed) and clapped long and loud. Tift said we were gonna make her cry. She deserved it. I don't know how many were at the Red Light show but I think word got around.

I've got some Lucinda Williams, Kim Richey, Shelby Lynne, and Kelly Willis and in my opinion she's right there with them. Anyone who likes that kinda sound and appreciates Gram Parson's legacy needs to go see her play. She has got the goods. I think I've found my new favorite female artist.
