Wow... mind boggling, that is.
Actually, "They Live" was previously released in R1 by Image under a license from Universal that has since expired. Universal now has the title back, and will most likely give it a new anamorphic transfer, include the commentary found on the foreign release and probably add some extra goodies. The general public only knows that the title is out of print and as a result, existing copies at retailers are few and far between.
This brings us to the theory of supply and demand: scarce, out of print title - exorbitant asking price of resellers. You do the math. Diehard collectors will and have paid outrageous prices for OOP titles. Just look up "Salo" on ebay. Usually goes for between $200 and $500 and has sold for as much as $800. Startling for a mediocre film, but since it is out of print and highly collectible...
My guess is, if and when the new special edition of "They Live" is announced, prices will plummet on the Image version.
